　　《伊索寓言》中大部分是动物故事。故事中的动物都是我们日常生活中喜闻乐见的。如狐狸、狼、狮子、驴、羊、狗、猫、鸡、老鼠、鹰、蚂蚁、乌龟、兔子等，因而它贴近我们的生活，读起来也生动有趣。作者往往根据动物的特征赋予某种特定的性格。如狼的凶残？狐狸的狡猾、驴子的愚蠢、狮子的威武、狗的骄傲、猫的嚣张、老鼠的猥琐、鹰的矫健、羊的弱小等，并运用拟人的手法来描写。一个故事往往只有两三种动物，只讲一两件事，让这些动物在保持动物特性的同时也让它们像人一样思想、像人一样行动，通过这种方式作者形象生动地表达出了深刻的道理，让我们深受启迪。不过在有些故事里动物的性格并不是一成不变的，如狐狸在一则故事里是阴险狡猾、自欺欺人的，可在另一则故事中可能就变成聪明伶俐的典型形象了。小羊在一篇故事中是受害的弱小者的形象，可到了另一篇就成了以弱胜强、敢于斗争、善于思考的典型了。因此小读者在阅读时要灵活些，随着故事走是最重要的。

　　《伊索寓言》中也有一些是人物故事。不过这些故事大多讲的也是人与动物的故事，但与纯粹的动物故事相比较，这些故事更贴近生活。比如《渔夫和鳗鱼》、《小孩儿和狼》、《射手和狮子》、《强盗和桑树》等。另外，人物故事中还出现了神的形象，这些神主要是古代人民所信奉的神灵，不过作者也赋予了人的性格，如《赫尔墨斯和雕像者》、《老人与死神》等。
